Expired marine flare disposal

Disposing of Expired Flares

Most flares have a use-by date of three years, and must be replaced before the expiry date. The flares contain explosive matter, leading to difficulties for safe and legal disposal.

Roads and Maritime (RMS) maintain a program to help boaters dispose of expired marine flares at various state-wide locations. This provides the boating community with an opportunity to safely dispose of their out of date flares.

Flare disposal locations and dates are published on the RMS website.

Check your marine flares to make sure they have not expired.
