One of the best ways to learn good boat handling skills is to have private boat training on board your vessel. This way, you can become familiar with its handling characteristics and build your confidence in the vessel and your driving abilities. The training can also help you get used to a new boat or a bigger boat. Based on your requirements, our senior maritime trainers will work with you to develop a boat training plan which focuses on the specific skills you need to consolidate your confidence and experience in handling your vessel.

Can a session go for longer than 3 hours?
Yes, it can. However we do recommend private training sessions are for no more than four hours as these sessions are intensive. There is a charge of $95.00 per hour for additional training time. Additional hours are subject to trainer availability and must be confirmed in advance of the training date.
Can I include family members or friends in this training?
Yes, absolutely. As this training is intensive we do stipulate no more than 4 people attend and each person must hold a current State Boat Licence.
How many private training sessions will I need?
We find that most people new to boating need to spend a minimum of one day a week over a three month period to gain the skills required to become a safe Competent Skipper. Remember, boating skills and seamanship cannot be taught in a day and everyone learns at a different pace. Like learning to drive a car, these skills are learned over time, with practice and in varying conditions. Whether you're new to boating or already have some experience, no matter what size your vessel is, undertaking practical training will expand your knowledge and confidence.
What can be included in the training?
The advantage of private training session is that it can be tailored to your specific needs. From launching and retrieving, marina berthing and close quarter handling, night navigation practice, setting up your boat for a floating pontoon, marine radio training, anchoring and mooring, preparing fenders and lines, sail training to passage planning, engine troubleshooting and electronics, you decide what to focus on.
I'm new to boating and not quite sure of all the seaworthy and safety requirements for my vessel?
Call us and we'll advise you what you need. We can also come and visit you on board, to check your vessel over before your session.
Can I transfer my training session to an alternative date?
Yes, you can. Contact us on 1300 723 112 and subject to trainer availability we'll move your session to a more suitable date.
Will I learn safety drills and steering rules?
Definitely. Safety is a large part of what we are about. Feeling safe and knowledgeable makes boating so much more enjoyable for you, your family and friends. Our courses and training programs include an emphasis on instilling confidence and learning practical boat handling and seamanship skills - docking, anchoring, navigation, engine maintenance, on board systems, overboard recovery, provisioning, crew briefing and most importantly how to be a good Skipper. What happens when the engine breaks down, or if there's an emergency on board? It's the SKIPPER'S job to plan for every eventuality, however unpleasant.
